Australia lagging behind on paid parental leave

Melbourne Business School Professor Joshua Gans discusses why he believes that a parental leave payment scheme will be implemented by the end of 2009. Gans compares Australia's current position with other OECD countries and says the nation is 'lagging'.

MBS Professor Joshua Gans comments on a paid parental leave scheme. Gans says that Australia doesn't have any paid form of maternity leave, though some larger employers and the public service do offer it. He notes that if employers were required to pay parental leave it could lead to discrimination against women and suggests that tax credits on employee salaries could be a more effective use of subsidies.
