The learning experience

The Executive MBA (EMBA) offered by Melbourne Business School (MBS) is one of the most innovative management development programs available in the Asia-Pacific region. The EMBA allows high potential managers to acquire a well recognised, advanced management qualification while enhancing their job performance and maintaining balance in their personal lives. It is particularly suited for organisations which seek to develop their next generation of leaders and for experienced executives who wish to accelerate their professional development.

Intensive design

In pursuing the EMBA participants commit to four highly intensive bursts of activity, each of four weeks duration, over an elapsed period of 14 months. The program has limited numbers, with approx 30-40 selected for each (annual) intake. This model of delivery has been strongly endorsed by both students and employers as it enables participants to fully focus on the learning process and maximise learning outcomes. Upon their return to the workplace in the intervening periods, they are immediately able to apply the knowledge gained.

International focus

The program recognises that management is increasingly a cross-border activity. The international module is conducted in the USA, Germany & China. In this context, MBS is especially delighted to be associated with the Kellogg School of Management in Chicago, where the program builds from the marketing, strategy and leadership material already studied. In Germany the program is hosted by WHU Otto Beisheim Graduate School of Management in Koblenz, widely recognised as the top private business school in the country.

Learning methods and assessment

The learning methods are diverse, ranging from interactive class discussions, case studies and group problem solving, to experiential activities and formal presentations. Current management concepts and associated business thinking are covered in an applied context.

A significant proportion of the program is undertaken in small syndicate groups, further enhancing the dynamic learning experience. Within the syndicates, participants undertake their assignments by drawing on the varied skills and expertise of people in their group. Syndicates work on tasks such as preparing cases for discussion in class, or completing assignments based on current issues in real organisations. During the EMBA, participants will experience four different syndicate groups - a different group of people for each module.

In order to promote additional learning within the group, a cooperative learning culture is encouraged. This is reinforced through a pass-fail assessment mode which substantially eliminates intra-group competition and develops a mutually supportive learning environment. Examinations are designed to further the development of problem-solving and analytical skills, testing students’ ability to apply the new concepts to which they have been exposed. The program is complemented with carefully selected guest speakers who are acknowledged leaders in their respective fields.

Each module and study area is assessed through a combination of individual and group assignments, examinations, contribution to class discussion and presentations. Examinations are designed to further the development of problem-solving and analytical skills, testing students’ ability to apply the new concepts to which they have been exposed.

The teaching faculty involved with this program is strongly motivated, with established reputations as outstanding management educators. The diverse class consists of proven achievers with a determination to make immediate contributions to their sponsoring organisations. The program is complemented with carefully selected guest speakers who are acknowledged leaders in their respective fields.
