Admission

To apply for a place in the part-time Melbourne MBA, you will need to satisfy the entry requirements. If you are unable to satisfy the requirements for the MBA, you may be eligible for entry into another degree or diploma offered by the School, in particular the Postgraduate Diploma of Management (PDM), and should contact the Admissions Office for further advice. Many students who begin study at the School with the PDM go on to complete an MBA.

Essential entry requirements
  • An undergraduate degree. This does not need to be in a business or commerce related discipline. Evidence of this degree is required in the form of full academic transcripts. A copy of a degree certificate is not sufficient.
  • At least two years full-time work experience.
  • A Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).
Essential supporting materials
  • A completed Melbourne Business School Application Form.
  • A verified transcript of all your post-secondary academic records.
  • Two confidential written referees reports, using the forms included in the application form. At least one referee should be familiar with your employment record.
  • An original or certified copy of your scores on the GMAT.
  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • Evidence of your citizenship or residency status in the form of a certified copy of your passport or birth certificate.
  • A passport sized photograph.
Optional supporting materials

You are welcome to supply any additional information that you believe will strengthen your application. Similarly, the School reserves the right to request any additional information that the Selection Committee believes will assist its admission decision.

The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
  • Melbourne Business School uses the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) in considering MBA applications for several reasons.
  • It gives a common point of reference for assessing the academic capabilities of applicants who have undergraduate degrees in different disciplines, often from different universities in different countries.
  • The GMAT has proven to be a good indicator of the ability of applicants to successfully complete the MBA program.
  • Preparing for and sitting the GMAT is an excellent way of preparing for a return to study. This is especially true of the quantitative component of the GMAT.
  • GMAT scores are used by business schools throughout the world to compare the quality of the students admitted to their programs.

More details about the Graduate Management Admissions Test including free downloadable preparatory materials are available from www.mba.com. The site also provides contact numbers for booking appointments to sit the test. Test centres are located in major Australian cities, including Melbourne, as well as locations throughout the world. When completing your enrolment information for the GMAT, please state the University of Melbourne code (1ZK-LW-21) (MBA, Part-time) and your GMAT score will be sent directly to the School. GMAT scores are valid for 5 years.

Visit the GMAT website for further information.

Timing

Admissions Decisions: MBS understands that awaiting the decision of the Selection Committee can be stressful. Decisions normally require a minimum of 2 weeks from receipt of a completed application.

Late Applications: Applications received after the closing date will only be processed if there are places remaining in that intake. Late applicants may be offered a place in a subsequent intake.

Deferred Entry: The School will normally allow a successful candidate to delay entry to the MBA program for one year without submitting a new application. Longer delays may require a new application.

Successful applications

A formal letter of offer is sent to successful applicants detailing the terms and conditions of the offer and setting a deadline by which it must be accepted. The deadline is normally about four weeks from the date of the letter of offer.

Unsuccessful applications

Typically one in every three applicants is successful. The school appreciates that considerable time and effort are required to apply for a place in the program and that it is disappointing to submit an unsuccessful application. However, the School regrets that it is not able to comment on specific factors which may have led to the final decision of the selection committee.
