Richard Gunawan is a Sales and Marketing Manager for Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), a risk management company who provide certification to organisations in the area of Quality, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety.

Richard was a part-time student at Mt Eliza, completing his MBA in 2005. He says the MBA not only helped to determine his career path, but also gave him a network of contacts that continues to be of great value to him in his personal and professional life.

"Previously my background was in food marketing. I had never marketed services for a technical engineering assessment company, so I was hesitant to join Lloyds Register Quality Assurance at first, due to its operational complexity and technicalities. But the MBA gave me the confidence to take on the challenge. I also spoke to Dr Graeme Cocks before I took on the job and he has been a great mentor for me.

"Just like many students, I was uncertain about my career direction before the MBA. I was not sure if I should move to consulting, marketing or operational management. In the end, the MBA reaffirmed for me that marketing is my absolute passion, and I aim to continue to specialise in that area."

Now enjoying a successful and busy career, Richard continues to use the knowledge and networks he built at MBS.

"I continuously grow my company's revenue by more than 10% by applying some of the principles Susan Ellis taught us in Strategic Marketing. My company even engaged Richard Searle (Negotiations lecturer) to conduct our corporate education program."

As an active member of the alumni community Richard enjoys maintaining close ties with his former classmates.

"I am constantly in touch with my fellow alumni. Vivek Prakash (MBA 2005), now works with me and Brendan Lau (MBA 2006) is a one of my closest friends. The alumni network is very important to us.

"I'm glad that I completed the MBA because the course was rigorous and gave me insights into numerous aspects of business operations. I learned more about myself and I was introduced to like-minded people who I am still in touch with today."
